Controlled environments and specialized laboratories are very similar to cleanrooms, with the difference that non-viable particle contamination is less critical.
However, the other characteristics of the environment (temperature, humidity, differential pressure, etc.) require attention just as thorough as for cleanrooms. In other words, a cleanroom is a controlled environment, but a controlled environment is not necessarily a cleanroom.
